Tune of the Day: The Runaway Bride

 Traditional Scottish/Irish jig

This tune was originally the air to a song from the 5th volume of James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum (1797) called “The Rinaway Bride”. The song was supposedly given to one of the editors of the series, Stephen or William Clarke, by a Roxburghshire gentleman.

The present jig is the Irish version of the song's melody, taken from Francis O'Neill's celebrated collection Music of Ireland, published in Chicago in 1903.

This is the second movement of Johann Joachim Quantz's Sonata in D major for flute and continuo, QV 1: Anh. 15a. As the “Anh.” (“Anhang”, German for annex) in the opus number suggests, the attribution of this sonata to Quantz is questioned by scholars.

Tune of the Day: Black Donald the Piper

 Traditional Scottish jig

This jig is taken from Francis O'Neill's celebrated collection Music of Ireland, published in Chicago in 1903. The tune is probably Scottish in origin, as the title clearly refers to the early-16th-century Scottish nobleman Black Donald (Domhnall Dubh in Gaelic), chief of Clan Donald and claimant to the Lordship of the Isles. He was captured by the Earl of Argyll while still a child and imprisoned in Innischonnel Castle in Loch Awe, where he remained in captivity for 37 years.
