Some random terms
- con semplicità
“With simplicity”. - fundamental A base pitch from which a series of harmonics is produced.
- orchestration The practice of writing music for an orchestra (or, more loosely, for any musical ensemble) or of adapting for orchestra music composed for another medium.
- pas de deux
An established item in ballet consisting of a dance performed by two dancers. - disjunct A melodic line that moves by leaps and skips rather than in steps.
- MIDI Acronym for “Musical Instrument Digital Interface”; technology standard that allows networking of computers with electronic musical instruments.
- vamp till ready In 20th century music, an indication to the accompanist to repeat a passage until the soloist is prepared to enter.
- oratorio
Large-scale dramatic genre originating in the Baroque, based on a text of religious or serious character, performed by solo voices, chorus and orchestra; similar to opera but without scenery, costumes or action. - schneller
Faster. - sonata-allegro form The opening movement of the sonata cycle, consisting of themes that are stated in the first section (exposition), developed in the second section (development), and restated in the third section (recapitulation).
- rubato
“Robbed” time; the subtle pressing forward and holding back the tempo in performance. - estampie
A type of early instrumental music of the 13th and 14th centuries, consisting of independent sections strung together. - Köchel Verzeichnis
The numbering system identifying compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. - sequence Restatement of an idea or motive at a different pitch level.
- eclogue A rustic poem usually having to do with shepherds, springtime and love. In Romantic piano music, a light, lyrical, uncomplicated composition.
