Some random terms
- dirge A generic term used for a composition designed specifically for a funeral or in commemoration of the dead.
- rondellus
A 13th century English style of three-voice composition. - diminution A Renaissance and Baroque ornamentation which consists of the restatement of a melody in which the note values are shortened, usually by half.
- non
“Not”. - Rinaldi numbers A numbering system identifying compositions by Antonio Vivaldi.
- dolcissimo
Very sweet, very soft. - conjunct Smooth, connected, moving in stepwise motion.
- couplet
A term used in the 1600s and 1700s for the intermediate sections of a rondeau. - tristezza
Sadness. - interval Difference in pitch between two notes.
- ad libitum
Literally, “at will”. At the discretion of the performer. At pleasure, changing the tempo of a particular passage. Sometimes, a part that may be omitted if desired. - line A general term for a discrete voice or part in a vocal or instrumental composition.
- solo
A passage that is to be performed by a single performer. - response Short choral answer to a solo verse; an element of liturgical dialogue.
- form The structure of a composition, the frame upon which it is constructed.
