Some random terms
- envelope An acoustical term referring to the attack, steady state (or duration), and decay of a sound.
- tuning The adjustment of the pitch of an instrument. Also, the set pitches to which an instrument is tuned.
- non-transposing instrument An instrument which is notated in the same key on paper that it sounds when played.
- vocal range The range of notes that a singing voice can encompass.

A directive to perform two octaves lower than written. - goliard song Medieval Latin-texted secular song, often with corrupt or lewd lyrics; associated with wandering scholars.
- quarter tone Half a semitone.
- shanty A song sung by sailors while working on a ship. A shanty has a chorus, which is sung by all, and verses that are usually sung by one voice.
- rabbia Rage, fury, anger.
- white noise Sounds containing every audible frequency at approximately the same intensity.
- allegretto A rather fast tempo marking between allegro and moderato, usually around 100–120 BPM.
- natural key A key whose signature contains no sharps or flats; basically, C major and A minor.
- vocal music music that is written or arranged to be performed by human voices.
- soprano The highest female voice.
- crescendo A directive to smoothly increase the volume.
