Some random terms

  • false note A muted or dampened note that has rhythm but often no discernible pitch.
  • split E mechanism On a flute, a system whereby the second G key (positioned below the G♯ key) is closed when the right middle-finger key is depressed, enabling a clearer third octave E; standard on most flutes, but omitted from many intermediate- and professional-grade flutes, as it can reduce the tonal quality of 3rd octave F♯.
  • severità [Italian] Strictness, severity.
  • moderato [Italian] A moderate tempo, faster than andante but slower than allegretto, usually around 100–120 BPM.
  • ledger line Short, horizontal line added to the top or the bottom of a staff for the reception of a note too high or too low to be represented on the staff.
  • stentando [Italian] Literally, “having difficulty”. A directive to perform in an ungraceful, heavy manner, holding back each note.
  • affettuoso [Italian] Tender, loving, affectionate.
  • tema [Italian] Theme, subject.
  • facile [Italian] “Easy”.
  • double exposition In a concerto, a twofold statement of the theme, once by the orchestra and once by the soloist.
  • impetuoso [Italian] Impetuous, vehement.
  • altissimo [German] Term used to indicate the tones of the second octave above the treble staff (G6 to F7), which are said to be “in altissimo”.
  • Trommelbass [German] Literally, “drum-bass”. A bass line that contains steady, constant, repeated notes.
  • lentement [French] Slowly.
  • natural key A key whose signature contains no sharps or flats; basically, C major and A minor.
